I was invited to create a piece for a new BBQ joint here in Savannah. The theme, smoke and music.
What do you think?
Instead of a vintage suitcase, I sourced an old guitar case. Thank you Ben!
I did not treat the case before starting. I created the background with ripped up pieces of tissue paper, scrapbook paper and sheet music. I glued them down with matte medium (fantastic product that will keep your paper from wrinkling) and used a brayer loaded with two different colors of paint (thinned out with glaze) to give it a cohesive smoky look.
I like to paint the faces in my notebooks and glue them onto my piece building the body and hair around it.
I painted the trim on this piece before adding the hair so I could give it the look of wrapping around the case. The hair is a cooper color and will shimmer when touched by the sun. I couldn’t help but add the little piggy. I also added touches of paisley to give it a vintage touch of balance. I finished it with two coats of polymer varnish.
